Amazon: Largest Jobs Announcement in JAX History

(From the JAX USA Partnership announcement July 26, 2016)

The wait is over! It’s official, Amazon will invest $200 million to build an international, state-of-the art fulfillment center in Jacksonville that will create 1,500 jobs. This is the single largest jobs announcement in our history and further supports our strategy of targeting top global companies.

Amazon will occupy an 850,000 sq. ft. footprint of a multi-story building that will total approximately 2.4 million sq. ft. of space. The company plans to be operational by the 2017 holiday season. The company will begin hiring employees six months prior to opening. Additionally, Amazon will be contracting about 2,000 people to build the new facility. The fulfillment and distribution center will be located in Northwest Jacksonville, an area the Chamber and City have been focusing on to reinvigorate growth.

Landing an international distribution facility would not have been possible without Mayor Lenny Curry, the Jacksonville City CouncilKirk Wendland and the Office of Economic Development, and Enterprise Florida. The Mayor and city officials provided accelerated permitting and competitive tax incentives, and the City Council unanimously approved this project in April.

Nat Ford and the Jacksonville Transportation Authority played a major role in the success of this project as well. JTA is building a transportation center that will connect people from surrounding neighborhoods to the 1,500 jobs the company is creating.

We have been working with Amazon and encouraging the company to consider Jacksonville for more than seven years, including a visit to the Seattle headquarters to meet with company executives. Our focus paid off. Through this process, Aaron Bowman, JAXUSA’s senior vice president of Business Development, coordinated nearly a dozen meetings and site visits with company representatives and site consultants to finalize the deal.

This is an incredible win for Northeast Florida and solidifies Jacksonville as a region of wide open opportunity where anything is possible.
